I came across this video at Politics After 50 of Richard Trumka Secretary Treasurer of the AFL-CIO delivering a speech that every American should watch and consider.
The truth is that there are a lot of white people in this country who will not vote for Obama because he is black. Some will admit it...most won't. I think some of them may not even be admitting it to themselves. Perhaps this speech will help some folks come to terms with their prejudice be it conscious or unconscious.
Sometimes when I hear a speech like this I can feel the hope and I am reminded of the nobility of the human spirit and what we can achieve if we stop living in fear and start opening our minds and our hearts. If you missed my original Racism Is For Idiots post you can read it here.
Peace Y'all

Amen!
Sad that Obama is going to lose some votes just becuse some bigots can't bring themselves to vote for a black man.
Those people need to get over themselves!
Greetings MM,
I think Richard is absolutely right...this election is about a fundamental shift in ideology. No one is perfect, not Unions, not Obama, Not me or you...but the thing is the passionate intention to seek a more peaceful and just world for all people. We can all help each other get past this habit of fear based living our country has developed and move forward to an amazing future. We should be leading the way, not making it worse. It is just a sad fact that not everyone will let go of the old way or even just get out of the way.
Thanks for reading and for taking the time to comment, MM.

Sadly, the Obama campaign released an ad tonight to show his "whiteness." While it is a good ad, it's just sad that they had to do it. I thought since Senator Obama is leading by decent margins in the polls, perhaps maybe we'd gotten over that except in the backwards trailer park kind of settings. I guess I am full of too much hope as a result of the successful week here in Ohio we had in taking voters to the polls.
We shall overcome.

Greetings D,
Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment.
I don't watch a lot of tv so I have not seen the ad. That is sad that they felt they had to do something like this now. I don't know if an ad about "whiteness" would persuade people like the woman Richard describes in his speech or the people I work with. I am afraid if the ad is about that it would only be a degradation in general without any positive effect.
I salute your work in getting the vote out...I don't have any doubt there are plans to alter it, but maybe America won't stand for it this time.
